Journal of a mature, non-Olympic woman in the process of converting to cycling as a method of daily transportation. Dealing with weather and assorted perils; exploring equipment, psychological fortitude, and diet; experiencing our surroundings on a smaller, closer scale; saving gas & boycotting the car industry.
Today's posting will have to be horribly postponed due to the fact that I have to show up at this ridiculous hour for jury duty -- a system I believe in but a duty I have managed to shirk for my entire adult life.

"She's no spring chicken," my mother would disclose mercilessly about women in their thirties trying to impersonate youth. Now, I'm even past the no-spring-chicken age. So don't think you have to be 12 to start riding a bike everywhere. I'm working out all the pesky details for you in case you want to do this yourself. But even if you never do it, you'll still know what it's like because I'm going to shrink you down to the size of a little rubber elf and glue you onto my handlebars. No changing your mind, no matter how much you beg me. So don't even start this unless you're sure you have the guts. PS: My other bike is a broom.

Brief rant: I am profoundly disturbed when the other-wise intelligent people whom I know weasle their way out of jury duty, leaving important decisions to be made by imbeciles.
I'm with you anon, I've never been called for duty, but I've had lots of friends talk about getting out of it. I WANT to do it.
I utterly agree with both of you. That's why I didn't wheedle out this time. I have completely reformed.

Believe me, I understand -- about the "a." Something like that would bug me no end. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. If I could edit it out for you, I would, but Blogger won't let me edit comments, even my own. At least your name's not on there. Whew!
